~ 30 years before Jackie, an African-American/Native-American played one game before it was discovered he was an African-American and he was kicked out of the league.

Jackie was indeed the first to play knowingly as an African-American. Larry Doby played that same year, but signed a few months after Jackie "broke the color barrier." Doby was the first AL African-American.

When I was a kid, I wanted to be Steve Garvey (must've been the hair). I played a bit of little league, but to be honest I was one of those geeky kids who was so scared of making mistakes and getting yelled at that I ended up making tons of mistakes and getting yelled at...a lot.

I still enjoyed the game and played "pick-up" baseball with kids in my neighborhood through high school. Through college I coached Little League and played in recreational leagues, but nothing that you'd call "organized."

BQ: I didn't play again in an "organized" league until I was 40. It's a 16 team league of guys mostly in their 20s and 30s. We got doctors & lawyers mixed in with former college and minor league players.

I'm the oldest guy on my team, but I seem to be the only guy who knows how to shorten up his swing to hit to the right side with a man on 2B, or go for a deep fly with a man on 3B.

Considering that most guys on my first-place Dodger team can't seem to do that who knows....maybe I could've made it to the Show.? Somehow, I think the fact that I need a full tube of Flex-all after each game tells me otherwise...

You have to remember baseball is popular in just three Countries: USA, Cuba and Japan; lack of competition is the reason it was canceled from Olympic games.
Nevertheless, it's possible to play as a professional in other Countries: in Europe the only two reasonable choices are Italy and the Netherlands; an average pay for a player in the IBL
http://www.fibs.it/it-it/ENGLISH-SECTION.aspx?IdSection=674
for instance, is 800 to 1800 Euro per month; the best players can gain over 6000 Euro, though.
